Helping families to keep afloat

There is something about children and water that just seems to naturally go together, like strawberries and cream or rhubarb and custard. Think of the perfect family summer holiday and almost always it will involve water in some way – be that relaxing by a pool or splashing around in the sea. To children water equals fun.

However, water can also mean danger. Drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death in children in the UK. Teaching children to swim and enjoy the water safely is a responsibility that parents take very seriously. There are over a million children learning to swim on the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme alone, with many more doing so through other means.

The number of children participating in swimming, diving and lifesaving activities has steadily increased over the past few years and according to the latest figures available, over half of those aged 5 to 10 years old do so at least once a month. The inclusion of swimming as part of the national curriculum should ensure that these numbers continue to rise, and more children gain the important skills needed to enjoy water safely.

There are also many more benefits associated with swimming. It’s a sport that doesn’t require expensive equipment and something that both boys and girls can enjoy equally. It is also a great form of exercise, that provides a full-body workout with a very low risk of injury. There are also significant potential benefits to mental health, as it provides an opportunity to switch off from the rest of the world and escape from screens for a while.

As an organisation, we are dedicated to helping parents to protect their children from the dangers that exist in life so that they can get on with life and enjoy the things that they love. Teaching a child to swim ensures they can relish having fun in the water, while reducing the worry for parents. In the same way, our School Fees Insurance provides that life ring to protect a child’s education should one or both parents die or become seriously ill.

We are delighted to have been chosen by the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) to be the sponsors of this year’s National Swimming Finals taking place at the London Aquatic Centre on Saturday 8th June. We are the first ever sponsors for this annual event. This will be a brilliant occasion with qualifiers from hundreds of schools across the country. It is a real achievement for the children who have made it, having faced rounds of extremely tough competition to earn their places.

We’ll be there throughout the day enjoying the atmosphere, on hand to answer any questions about the cover we offer. We’re here to help parents to protect their children, so they can make the most of special days like this.
