Meet our newest member of the team, Daniel Burns

We’re delighted that Daniel has decided to join our team here in our unique offices on Dean House Farm in the tranquil Surrey Hills. As a customer services executive, he’ll be handling a whole range of queries on our personal lines. If you call or email us, Daniel may well be the one to answer your questions. To warm him up for his new role, we asked him a few questions of our own, so we can introduce him to you properly.

Hi Daniel, welcome to the team. What was it about SFS that attracted you to the job?

Thanks. I’ve had a very warm welcome from the team, which has made settling in much easier. Previously I worked for employee benefits broker, JLT in Leatherhead, doing a similar customer services role. Being a much larger organisation, the work there wasn’t that varied and every day was pretty similar to the next. I’m really looking forward to joining a smaller team, where I’ll get to see much more of the business. Besides customer service, I’ll also get to assist with sales and market, which is a great chance to expand my skills.

What are you looking forward to the most?

I’m excited about getting the chance to work closely with customers. I know that some of the claims we deal with can be traumatic. Often, we are one of the first calls that people make after a bereavement as they are desperate to secure their children’s education after their world’s been turned upside down. I know these will be tough, but I want to be able to help and make a difference when our customers are going through such an emotional time.

Did you ever think you’d be working on a farm?

No! However, my first job was in a children’s nursery and organising them felt a bit like herding sheep at times! After working in more urban settings, I’m really enjoying the contrast of being out in the countryside. I live in Dorking, so the commute is very easy. I love the fact I can drive to work, there’s no traffic to contend with (unless the cows are being moved to a different field) and I have no problems finding a parking space.

What keeps you busy outside of work?

I have two passions; football and amateur dramatics. I enjoy playing football whenever I can, and I support Millwall, everyone’s favourite second team 😉 Under club legend, Neil Harris, we’ve just had a great season, so I’m hopeful we can carry that form into the new year. I love performing and connecting with people, which might be why I chose to work in customer service. My next production is Wind in the Willows at the Epsom Playhouse. I’m taking on one of the main parts, Mole, so I may well call on my new colleagues to help me learn my lines; I have a lot!

Finally, what has been the thing that has surprised you most about SFS so far?

It was quite a surprise to find that we’re regularly joined by two dogs, Arthur and Millie in the office. I’ve never had that before in the places I’ve worked in, but I like the relaxed set up here and they are a very calming influence. I’ve also enjoyed being able to work with every different department and getting to see the full scope of the business beyond my department.
